The 10th tournament sees the participation of three Vietnamese teams: VTV Binh Dien Long An, Thong Tin Lien Viet PostBank, Vietinbank and five foreign teams: Fujian and Jiangsu Clubs from China, Malaysia, Thailand Junior and 4.25 Sports Club from the Democratic Republic of Korea.
The eight teams are divided into two groups, competing in a round-robin format, from which the two best-performing teams in each group will meet in the semi-finals.
In a match before the opening ceremony, Thailand Junior defeated Malaysia 3-0 while VTV Binh Dien Long An lost 1-3 to Jiangsu in the second match on March 19.
The tournament will take place until March 27 with all 20 games to be broadcast live on VTV.
On the sidelines, the organisers will hold a photo exhibition and auction off memorabilia from the tournament in order to raise money for charity which will be used to support poor people and build houses for the disadvantaged in Ninh Binh province.
In addition to being an opportunity for domestic volleyball teams to practise and improve their skills, the VTV-Binh Dien Cup also conveys the image of a friendly and hospitable Vietnam.
Last year, the Cup was won by 4.25 Sports Club from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
