Vietnam wins first women's Asian cycling title

The women's 106km road race gathered 27 participants, with That competing against opponents from Chinese Taipei, Japan, the Republic of Korea and China.

The Vietnamese star produced an excellent sprint in the last metres to beat Chinese Taipei's Huang Ting Ying and Chang Yao for Vietnam's maiden women's title at the continental-level arena, clocking the best time of three hours, 11 minutes and 59 seconds.

Despite settling for just 14th and 18th place, respectively, teammates Nguyen Thi Thi and Phan Thi Lieu contributed remarkably to That's supreme finish.

This is the best performance of Vietnamese cycling at the continental playground within the past 18 years, since Truong Quoc Thang's men's gold medal in 2000.

Four years ago, That won a silver medal at the Asian Games (Asiad) in Incheon, the Republic of Korea.

She will have a three-month training course in Switzerland in preparation for the Asiad 2018, slated for this August in Indonesia.
