Accordingly, a total of 114 athletes with disabilities will represent Vietnam to compete in six sports: swimming (34 athletes), chess (8 athletes), athletics (37 athletes), powerlifting (11 athletes), table tennis (12 athletes) and badminton (12 athletes).
Most noticeable among the country's gold medal hopes are Vo Thanh Tung and Nguyen Thanh Trung (swimming), and Le Van Cong and Nguyen Binh An (powerlifting).
At the 2nd Asian Para Games in Incheon, Republic of Korea last year, Thanh Tung contributed five medals to Vietnam's nine-gold tally, while the remaining three also grabbed gold medals in the men's 100m breaststrokes and 200m medley swimming, the men's 49kg powerlifting and the men's 54kg powerlifting, respectively.
The week-long event, the eighth of its kind, is expected to bring together 1,500 athletes from 11 ASEAN member countries in 15 sports: archery, athletics, badminton, Boccia, chess, cerebral palsy football, football 5-a-side, goalball, powerlifting, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tenpin bowling and wheelchair basketball.
Competition will take place at three venues: Singapore Sports Hub, Marina Bay and Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The Athletes' Village, located in Marina Bay Sands Hotel, will be open to participating guests from November 27 to December 10.
Vietnam ended up in fourth place overall at the previous competition in Myanmar, winning a total of 48 gold, 66 silver and 72 bronze medals.
A send-off will be held in Ho Chi Minh City on November 26 to boost Vietnamese athletes' spirit ahead of their departure for Singapore for the Para Games.
