The statement was made during a meeting in Hanoi on February 13 between Sen Lt Gen Do Ba Ty, deputy minister of national defence and chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, and Gen Moeldoko, chief of staff of the Indonesian National Armed Forces.
Gen Ty expressed his hope that Gen Moeldoko's visit would boost friendship and co-operation between the two peoples and armies, towards each nation's interests and the construction of the ASEAN community by 2015.
Both sides discussed several regional and international issues of mutual concern, reviewed their military ties and proposed measures to improve the relationship in the future.
They agreed to increase exchanges and high-level meetings to enhance mutual understanding and trust, creating common views on regional and international issues and bilateral ties.
In addition, the two sides will promote the naval co-operation mechanism, study potential co-operation in other areas and work towards the establishment of appropriate consultative mechanisms, while enhancing mutual support at multilateral forums and on issues of mutual concern.
