Vietnam claim title in thrilling penalty shoot-out

Amid strong supported from home fans, U-21 Vietnam began the match with excitement, surprisingly overwhelming the guests, who were considered much stronger.

Against the run of play, Sydney struck first with an opener from Joshua one minute before half-time.

Sydney's fragile advantage did not last long. Five minutes after the hour mark, Van Thuan threaded a clever pass to Dinh Bao, who beat the Sydney goalkeeper to pull Vietnam even, forcing the game into a penalty shoot-out, which Vietnam won 4-1.

The championship title earned Vietnam the trophy and US$12,000 in prize money, while runners-up Sydney received US$7,000. Malaysia edged out Myanmar 2-1 in the third-place match to claim a US$5,000 cash prize.

Ho Khac Ngoc of Vietnam was voted the tournament's most valuable player, while Sydney's Alex Urosevski and Tristan John Prendergast were named top scorer and best goalkeeper.
