Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Cam Tu said the fair, part of the National Trade Promotion Programme, was organised with the aim of enhancing co-operation between the northwest of Vietnam, including Lao Cai, and China's southwestern provinces, including Yunnan.
The six-day fair offers a valuable opportunity for businesses from the two countries to meet and network, Tu added.
Nguyen Thanh Duong, vice chairman of the Lao Cai provincial People's Committee confirmed that this year's event is the largest one yet, with more than 700 booths, 200 of which are occupied by businesses from China's Yunnan, Nanning and Shenzhen.
On display is a wide range of products such as handicrafts, machines, chemicals and wooden products.
Contracts valuing approximately US$240 million are expected to be signed during the event.
