On Sunday, Vietnam team won two gold medals by Ha Thi Nguyen in Taekwondo and Tran Thi Nhu Y in Judo. These medals bring the total number of golds for Vietnam to 53, along with 38 silvers and 49 bronzes, occupying the third place on the medal table.
Nguyen beat Indonesia's rival Shaleha Fitriana Yusuf 21-10 in the women's Taekwondo 62kg division to pocket the first gold of the day for Vietnam on.
Later, Nhu Y defeated Myanmar's rival Aye Aye in the women's under-78kg category in Judo and defended her gold medal won at 28th SEA Games.
Also in Taekwondo, Pham Thi Thu Hien took a silver medal in the women's U-57kg category.
On the day, Vietnamese female athletes won a silver medal in sepak takraw in the double's event and another in futsal. They were all beaten by their Thai rivals.
Vietnamese men and women's volleyball teams beat both the Philippines' teams to secure two more bronzes.
In the men's singles quarter-finals, top Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh won a breath-taking 2-1(16-21, 21-17 and 21-18) victory against host player Iskandar Zulkarnain and also the No. 4 seeded, thereby earning a ticket to the semi-finals. Tien Minh's next opponent in the round for the top four is No. 1 seeded Jonathan Christie from Indonesia (the 22nd player in the world rankings).
Taking the lead on the medal tally is host Malaysia with 96 gold medals, 63 silver medals and 63 bronze medals. Thai delegation had a strong breakthrough today to surpass Vietnam to occupy the second position after having won the same number of gold medals at 53, but with higher number of silvers and bronzes (71 and 68 respectively).
In the remaining three days at SEA Games 29, Vietnam hopes to win more golds in Taekwondo, Pencak Silat, weightlifting and muay. The team aims for 49-59 gold medals to rank in the top three.
