Rio 2016: Marksman Vinh brings home silver

Vinh scored 191.3 points in the finals after 20 shots, while defending gold medalist Jin Jong-oh from the Republic of Korea (RoK) won gold with 193.7 points, setting the Olympic record. Jin also became the first shooter to win a single event in three consecutive Olympics.

Kim Song-guk of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea finished third with 172.8 points.

The silver is Vinh's second Olympic medal. The 41-year-old shooter secured Vietnam's first gold medal at the Olympics in the men's 10m air pistol event on August 7 with a score of 202.5, also setting the Olympic record.

Vinh was among the top eight qualifiers for the final at the 50m pistol. He ranked 6th in the qualification with 556 points, thanks to his performance, particularly two tens scored in the last two series. Vinh's teammate Tran Quoc Cuong earned 542 points, ranking 31st.

Under the new regulation at this year's event, all the top eight qualifiers started from zero in the final.

Ending the first eight series, Vinh was in 2nd with 77.5 points, following Kim with 78.4 points. With his ninth and tenth shots, the Vietnamese shooter climbed to top with 96.9 points.

Vinh continuously took the lead, but his lead gradually dwindled after each shot.

The RoK climbed to third at 133.3 points after the 13th and 14th shots, still 3.5 points behind Vinh in first place.

After the 18th shot, Kim was eliminated and took the bronze, leaving Jin and Vinh to duel for gold.

Prior to the last two series, Vinh still took the lead with 0.2 points higher than the RoK's Jin.

In the penultimate series, the 19th shot, Vinh scored only 8.5 while the RoK climbed to top after scoring 10.

In the last shot, Vinh only hit 8.2. Jin ended the duel with a 9.3, successfully defended his title.

Vinh ended the Olympic campaign with one gold and one silver medal, marking a historic feat not only for the national shooting team but also Vietnam sports as a whole. It is also the first time Vietnamese sports delegation have won two medals at the Olympics.

Thanks to Vinh's success, Vietnam currently shares the 16th place on the medal table with hosts Brazil, one gold and one silver each.
