Although the number of foreign visitors to Vietnam reached 674,204 in May 2014 was down by 9.62% from the previous month, it was a 20.66% increase over May of last year.
The inflow of visitors from Hong Kong recorded the highest increase with 179.69%. This was followed by Germany (119.69%), China (43.39%), Laos (39.24%), Cambodia (34.81%), Russia (27.98%) and Spain (26.73%).
Vietnam's tourism sector also received 20.4 million domestic visitors, a year-on-year rise of 6.7%, and earned a total revenue in excess of VND109 trillion (US$ 5.12 billion), up 28%.
VNAT Director Nguyen Van Tuan has conducted working sessions with the embassies of Russia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia and Singapore to seek their co-operation and assistance in developing the sector. He confirmed that Vietnam's tourism activities continue as usual despite the ongoing tensions in the East Sea, even in coastal tourist destinations.
The tourism sector has been taking and will continue to take all available measures to ensure the safety, security and quality of its tourism services, Tuan said.
