According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the project is crucial for industrial zones to achieve sustainable, comprehensive development, creating a momentum for the country's green growth strategy.
The 4.5 million USD eco-industrial park project was approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in August, 2014, using non-refundable aid from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
It consists of five main components and will deliver policies and regulations regarding eco-related standards for industrial zones and strengthen IZ planning and management capacities at all levels, increase State agencies' technical competence in the transfer of technologies and application of clean and low-carbon technologies as well as safe, resource-efficient production methods.
An initial assessment conducted at the Khanh Phu IP in Ninh Binh revealed that surveyed enterprises could potentially convert themselves into eco-ones, which would help them save between 5 and 10 percent of energy, and 10-30 percent of water resource. If doing well, the enterprises could also improve their competitiveness as well.
So far, ten enterprises in the Khanh Phu IP will participate in the project. They will receive training on cleaner production along with consultancy on technology renovation to save energy efficiently and reduce waste discharged into the environment.
The project aims to reduce182,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and 6 million cubic metres of waste water a year while ensuring the quality of waste water meets international standards.
