The project on plastic waste reduction in the Vietnamese tourism sector is funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project has been piloted in Gia Vien district of Ninh Binh province and Hoi An ancient city of Quang Nam province. The initial outcomes have proved its effectiveness and it can be multiplied nationwide.
In Ninh Binh, the communication work to raise public awareness of environmental protection has received attention. Solutions to reduce plastic waste have been carried out in some tourist sites in the province.
The year 2024 marked the third phase of the project with a set of criteria to evaluate and rank local tourist sites, and travel enterprises without plastic waste expected to be issued, so as to build green tourism products.
At the workshop, participants heard the introduction of an application on plastic waste management.
Participants discussed, shared their experiences and methods in protecting the environment and models of reducing plastic waste.
A representative of the Vietnam Tourism Association hoped local tourist sites, accommodation establishments and travel companies will continue to carry out good models and effective ways, and urged firms to register for the pilot programme on zero-plastic waste in a bid to adjust and issue the set of criteria; thus contributing to the implementation of goals of sustainable tourism development in Vietnam.
