Plenty of potential and advantages
The mountainous commune of Phu Long in Nho Quan district has favourable soil conditions to grow sweetsop - a kind of tropical fruit that has high economic value. Therefore, local people have exploited soil and climate conditions to develop sweetsop farming so as to earn more money.
Thanks to applying modern farming practices and scientific advances, the model of sweetsop farming has reaped fruitful outcomes and has been duplicated widely. Sweetsop has been rated as a 4-star OCOP product.
Nho Quan has also taken advantage of the rich ecosystem in Cuc Phuong National Park to develop herbal products such as camelia cucphuongensis.
Camelia cucphuongensis has been planted in a large-scale area and become a typical farm product of not only Nho Quan district but also Ninh Binh province. The Camelia cucphuongensis tea product has been rated as a 4-star OCOP product.
Other localities in the province have also exploited their geological and climate conditions to develop their own key farm produce.
Tam Diep city has paid attention to developing peach flower in Dong Son commune, and Quang Soi green tea tree farming.
Hoa Lu district has developed products made from lotus, while the coastal district of Kim Son has taken advantage of sea-based economy to develop aquaculture.
Increasing values for local farm produce
In the past few years, Ninh Binh has expedited numerous measures to assist localities to build brands for their farm produce in a bid to stimulate good production in line with value chain, thus increasing incomes for local people.
Implementing the OCOP programme, numerous OCOP products have been developed and become typical specialties for each locality. These products have helped advertise the culture, history and image of the ancient capital as well.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the period of 2022-2025, Ninh Binh sets an orientation to develop key products of the five ecological sub-regions in combination with developing tourism. Each sub-region has an orientation to develop its own key products and specialties.

In particular, the province has issued numerous policies and mechanisms to support the development of specialties and agricultural products.
Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, Vice Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said basing on the strengths of each ecological sub-region, the department will continue to support these localities to build brands for their farm produce, geographical indications and origin traceability; boost advertisement and trade promotion; providing knowledge and skills for business households to expand markets and develop gifts and souvenirs in line with local historical and cultural values.
In addition, the department also works with related units to develop agricultural tourism and tours combining sightseeing and visiting handicraft villages.
In the time to come, Ninh Binh will continue to accelerate the OCOP programme in combination with restructuring the agriculture sector; increasing the effectiveness of production and business for key farm produce and craft products in a bid to add more value for these products, thus contributing to the comprehensive and sustainable development of the local agriculture sector.
