Addressing the opening ceremony, Phan Huy Hien, Deputy Editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan newspaper and head of the steering committee for the tournament, highlighted the development achievements of Vietnamese table tennis over the past years, especially in the regional and international arenas.
The annual event offers a good chance to evaluate the quality of table tennis training in cities and provinces, while helping the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation to seek, discover, and select outstanding players for the national teams, and contributing to promoting the development of the table tennis practising movements on a national scale, he said.
The competitors are battling it out for seven sets of medals in the men's and women's singles, doubles and team events, and the mixed doubles category. In addition, the organising committee will present prizes to the best young male and female players, the miss beauty of the tournament, and the localities which have actively developed the grassroots table tennis movements.
The six-day tournament gathers most of Vietnam's leading players in the sport, such as Nguyen Anh Tu and Tran Tuan Quynh (Hanoi), Dinh Quang Linh (Army team), and Mai Hoang My Trang (Ho Chi Minh City), alongside many other potential young faces.
A series of matches in the men's team event took place after the opening ceremony.
