National Pencak Silat Championships open in Hai Duong

More than 270 martial artists representing 24 teams from across the country are competing at the 2013 National Pencak Silat Championships, underway in the northern province of Hai Duong until October 27.
The athletes contend for titles in demonstration (Seni) and combat (Tanding) events in 11 men's weight classes, between 45kg and over-110kg, and eight women's weight categories, ranging from 45kg to over-75kg.
The annual tournament provides a good opportunity for the fighters to hone their skills, gain experience and vie for slots in the national pencak silat team.
Hanoi took top honours at last year's event, winning a total of eight gold, one silver and four bronze medals. Ho Chi Minh City were runners-up with three gold, three silver and five bronze medals, followed by Hai Duong with two gold and three silver medals.
