NA's ninth session closes after 30 days

The closing ceremony was chaired by NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung and broadcast live to the nation.

Addressing the event, Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung hailed NA deputies for their outspoken revelations on shortcomings that could hinder development, especially as Vietnam's sea and island sovereignty is being violated by China's large-scale construction on reef islands in Vietnam's Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, disrupting the status quo and threatening peace, stability, maritime and aviation freedom in the East Sea.

He called on government, agencies and the entire political system to improve national economic competitiveness and restructuring, extend international integration and firmly safeguard peace and stability.

The entire Party, people and forces must stay united to overcome challenges and successfully fulfil the 2015 socio-economic development goals and the 2011-2015 plan, keeping the country on track for the next development phase, he said.

Reviewing accomplishments during the ninth session, Hung said the NA has fine-tuned a number of regulations for the State and political apparatus in line with the new Constitution and with respect to the law-governed State and public democracy.

The legislature adopted a resolution on lump-sum social insurance payments for workers and another on strengthening measures to prevent and combat wrongful convictions and compensation for victims in criminal procedure which received 92.1 percent approval.

It also stressed the need to undertake the construction of Long Thanh international airport in the southern province of Dong Nai, considering it a significant project for the country and the southern region in particular.

To realise the NA's decisions, the Chairman asked the NA Standing Committee, the NA Council of Ethnic Affairs, NA committees, the government, local authorities, the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuracy, the Vietnam Fatherland Front and other relevant units to exercise their authority to bring newly-adopted laws and resolutions to life.

In his closing speech, he also requested lawmakers meet with constituents and discuss their aspirations following the session.

Earlier, 92.71% of deputies passed a resolution on question-and-answer sessions.
