Grand ceremony marks 90th Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day

Addressing the ceremony, President Truong Tan Sang said that over the last 90 years the press has accompanied and grown with the revolution while serving the revolution, the nation and the people.

Acknowledging achievements of Vietnam's revolutionary press, President Sang praised revolutionary journalists as soldiers who, with pens and paper as their weapons, have made worthy contributions to the cause of national liberation, construction and defence.

The State leader mentioned that the current international and regional situation could bring both advantages and challenges to the nation's causes of innovation, industrialisation, modernisation international integration, and national construction and denfence, requesting the press continue to promote its glorious tradition of being the vanguard in the culture-ideology front.

He called on the media to continue innovating and improving the quality of work in presenting an accurate picture of the country's development, as well as consolidating and strengthening the people's trust in the Party and the State, and creating social consensus to encourage the whole Party, the people and military to actively participate in the patriotic emulation movement.

The press should also detect and replicate advanced models and good deeds, while protecting justice, the rights and legitimate interests of the people, and the nation's good traditional values, as well as fighting against corruption, wastefulness, and bureaucracy in all sectors.

He urged the media to improve the quality of external communication to help international friends understand the Party and State's guidelines and policies and broadcast images of the country and people to the international community, serving to promote international integration and international support for national construction and defence.

Speaking at the awards ceremony for the 2014 National Press Awards, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association and Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan (People) newspaper, Thuan Huu stated that over the last 90 years, Vietnam's revolutionary journalism has been constantly growing in both quantity and quality. Journalists have strongly developed their skills and responsibilities to assume the mission of providing essential public information and encouraging the implementation of the Party and State's policies and laws.

Huu, who is also Chairman of the National Journalism Award Council, said that among 177 entries in the final round, the organising board decided to present nine A prizes, 26 B prizes, 54 C prizes and 11 consolation prizes to winners of the national press awards for 2014.

This year, Nhan Dan newspaper won three B prizes, two C prizes and one consolation prize.
