Five Vietnamese female scientists win L'Oreal-UNESCO awards

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoai, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine under the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Dung, head of the Department for Environmentally Friendly Technology of the Institute of Environment Technology under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology won the L'Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science.

Meanwhile, three young female scientists received the L'Oreal National Fellowship for Women in Science. They are Dr. Tran Phuong Thao from the Hanoi University of Pharmacy; Dr. Hoang Thi Dong Quy from the University of Science - Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City; and Dr. Nguyen Thi Le Thu from the University of Technology - Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

The awardees have made significant contributions to the health of the community by seeking new medicinal materials for the treatment of cancer and Alzheimer'sdisease, as well as studying new materials to produce smart silicon applicable for implants and fire-proof polymer nanocomposite used in construction and transport.

The awards were granted by the For Women in Science Programme, launched by the L'Oreal Group and UNESCO in 1998.

The L'Oreal-UNESCO partnership is a long-term commitment to recognising women in science and supporting scientific vocations.

The Women in Science has grown into a global programme that includes international, regional and national fellowships, and an international network of more than 2,000 women in more than 100 countries.
