The Vietnam men's tennis team has been promoted to play in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group II at next year's Davis Cup season, following their upset 2-1 victory over Hong Kong (China) in the final Group III play-off on September 15.
The door to promotion appeared ready to close for Vietnam after Nguyen Hoang Thien suffered a narrow 1-2 loss to his more experienced opponent Ognian Kolev in the first singles match.
Pham Minh Tuan lit up the hopes for the Southeast Asian country by finishing off King Phillip 2-0 in the second singles one, forcing the playoff to be decided by a doubles match, in which Le Quoc Khanh paired with Do Minh Quan to convincingly defeat the Hong Kong duo Ho Li Hei Yin and Lam Siu Chuen 2-0, handing Vietnam an aggregate 2-1 victory.
With the precious triumph, Vietnam landed in second place in Group III qualifying round, behind Hong Kong (China), and officially realise their promotion dream for the 2014 season.
