The new route runs 80.2 kilometres from near Van Don Airport through the districts of Tien Yen, Dam Ha and Hai Ha and ends at the city of Mong Cai.
It extends from the Ha Long-Van Don expressway, which opened to traffic in December last year.
The project will be carried out at a cost of nearly VND11.2 trillion (US$481.6 million) under a public-private partnership, with the investor being a consortium of three companies, Long Van, Mat Troi Van Don and Cong Thanh.
To date, site clearance in the areas where the expressway traverses has been fundamentally completed and more than 80% of the cleared site has been transferred to the investor.
Quang Ninh Chairman Nguyen Duc Long affirmed that the province is focusing its efforts on the Van Don-Mong Cai expressway in order to complete its road infrastructure and open new development opportunities.
The province has also approved a proposal to assign the investor to study a plan to raise the expressway's maximum speed to 120 kilometres per hour.
