Nearly 2,000 athletes and officials from 11 Southeast Asian countries have arrived to participate in the weeklong biennial games, which first took place in Kuala Lumpur in 1988.
The athletes compete in 12 sports. A total of 399 gold medals will be awarded at the Games.Most of the events will be held in Nay Pyi Taw, and the remaining competitions take place in Yangon and Mandalay.
At the previous edition of the Games in Indonesia, Thailand finished first overall with a total of 295 medals, including 126 gold. Indonesia and Malaysia came in second and third, while Vietnam finished in fourth place.
The Vietnamese sport contingent, consisting of about 120 athletes, is targeting a top-three finish at this year's Para Games. They will take part in six sports, with title hopes placed on athletics, swimming and weightlifting.
