The quadrennial event aims to promote sports activities, practice people's health, discover and promote high achievers for national teams.
The opening ceremony drew the attendance of PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam, Secretary of Ha Noi Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai, representatives from ministries and sectors, and thousands of athletes, coaches, and sport officialsfrom 63 localities, and 15,000 spectators at My Dinh National Stadium.
Addressing the event, on behalf of the Government, Deputy PM Dam lauded efforts made by Hanoi city, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, relevant sectors and localities in preparing for the sports games.
He said that the Games contribute to developing sports while encouraging the habit of physical exercises among local people.
The 8th National Sports Games will run between November 15 and December 10 in Ha Noi, Hoa Binh and Khanh Hoa province. This is the largest of its kind in Viet Nam involving 11,700 athletes and coaches.
The athletes, who came from all the 63 provinces and centrally-run cities and the military and police, are competing for medals in 743 events of 36 sports, including golf, karate-do, wushu, pencak silat, athletics, swimming, boxing and fencing.
