8th National Congress of Vietnam Fatherland Front opens

The event also saw the presence of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Mininster Nguyen Tan Dung, and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, among other former and incumbent Party and State leaders.

Under the theme 'Solidarity-Democracy-Innovation-Development', the two-day congress will review the performance of the VFFCC in the 2009-2014 tenure and work out plans for the 2014-2019 tenure. The congress will also revise and supplement the VFFCC charter and elect the Presidium of the VFFCC for the 8th tenure.

Addressing the opening ceremony, VFFCC President Nguyen Thien Nhan said that VFF congresses at all levels in preparation for the 8th National Congress of the VFFCC were encouraging political activities, contributing to enhancing the public awareness of the national great unity and promoting patriotic movements towards successful implementation of socio-economic development tasks and ensuring national defence and security.

He said that the current context of Vietnam and the world requires the VFFCC to renew itself, clarify its goals and action plans, promote the national unity bloc and build and defend the country to fulfil its assigned mission.

Thus, the 8th Congress of the VFFCC will continue to boost the strength of national unity, build and defend the nation towards a strong country and a democratic and civilised society, he added.

The congress will continue its working sessions until September 27.
